K&N’s team brings more than 30 years of insurance experience. Language assistance is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, French and Russian, subject to staff availability.

Start your way

What car insurance does New York require?

For most New York vehicles, the state requires liability insurance, basic no-fault coverage and uninsured-motorist protection. These are legal minimums, not a recommendation for every driver or household.

Required coverage New York minimum
Bodily injury liability At least $25,000 for injury to one person and $50,000 for injury to two or more people in one accident. Separate higher limits apply when an injury results in death.
Property damage liability At least $10,000 for damage to another party’s vehicle or property in one accident.
Basic no-fault (PIP) Up to $50,000 per eligible person for defined economic losses arising from a covered motor-vehicle accident, subject to the law and policy.
Uninsured motorists At least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for covered bodily injury involving an uninsured or hit-and-run vehicle in New York.

Keep required insurance active while a New York registration remains valid. Review the current NY DMV insurance requirements and the NY DFS auto coverage checklist. Ask what higher limits or optional coverage could address in your circumstances before choosing only the minimum.

Coverage choices beyond the minimum

The phrase “full coverage” does not define one universal policy. Compare the actual coverages, limits, deductibles, endorsements and exclusions. A lender or lessor may also require physical-damage coverage.

Collision and comprehensive

Collision can address covered damage to your vehicle from a collision. Comprehensive can address covered non-collision losses such as theft, vandalism, fire, weather, glass or contact with an animal. Policy terms and deductibles apply.

Uninsured and underinsured protection

Supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage can extend bodily-injury protection when an at-fault vehicle has no insurance or insufficient limits, subject to New York rules and the policy.

Other available options

Additional PIP, towing, rental reimbursement, medical payments, spousal liability and other options may be available. Ask what each option covers, its limit and what conditions apply.

The NY DFS auto insurance resource center explains required and optional coverage and advises consumers not to shop by price alone.

What should you have ready for a car insurance quote?

Accurate information helps prevent misleading comparisons and delays. Prepare:

  • Each vehicle: year, make, model, VIN, ownership or lease information and safety or anti-theft equipment.
  • Each household driver: license details, driving history and who will regularly operate each vehicle.
  • Use and mileage: commuting, pleasure, school, annual mileage and any disclosed business use.
  • Garaging: the accurate home address and where the vehicle is normally kept.
  • Current coverage: declarations page, current limits and deductibles, policy end date and desired effective date.

Do not send payment details, driver’s-license images or other sensitive documents through ordinary email unless K&N directs you to an approved secure method.

Why can two quotes look so different?

Insurers apply their filed rules to the driver, vehicle, use, garaging territory and requested coverage. Compare matching inputs, the full payment schedule, applied discounts, limits, deductibles, endorsements and exclusions—not only the initial payment.

For vehicles used in business, review the New York commercial auto guide rather than assuming a personal policy applies. For broader cost questions, use the New York car insurance cost guide.

Questions drivers ask before starting

Can I request a quote after my policy ended?

Yes. Provide the accurate prior-policy end date and explain any coverage gap. Availability and pricing vary. Do not drive or keep an active New York registration without the insurance required by DMV.

Can coverage always start the same day?

No universal timing can be promised. Timing depends on the completed application, documents, payment, underwriting and insurer confirmation. Do not drive until the effective date and valid proof of insurance are confirmed.

How long does it take to start a quote?

When the required driver and vehicle information is ready, many personal-auto quote requests can be started online or by phone in about 5–10 minutes. A completed quote or active policy is not guaranteed within that time.

Can I begin online and finish by phone?

Yes. Begin through K&N’s online quote path or call for personal help. A quote request or application start is not a binder or proof that coverage is active.
