Getting Car Insurance Without A License

Did you buy a car just recently, inherit one, or were you gifted a car by a loved one? One of the very first things you’ll need to do following new ownership of the vehicle is to purchase insurance for it. But what if you don’t have a driver’s license at the moment? Should you still insure your car? Can you even get car insurance without a license?

Here, we are going to take a look at answers to the questions just posed.

Why Get Insurance?

You may be asking the question, “If I don’t have a license, why would I need car insurance?” Even if you don’t have a driver’s license, you could need car insurance for a number of reasons.

  • You need to show proof of insurance as a new driver to get a license.
  • You’re ensuring someone with a learner’s permit or someone under 18. (Contracts cannot be legally entered into by minors. Even though you won’t be driving the vehicle yourself, you may be assisting someone who can’t legally purchase insurance on their own, for the time being.)
  • You’re not going to drive the car because it’s a collector’s item and/or vintage. So why insure the car if no one’s going to drive it? You’re protecting it against theft and damage, possibly with “classic car insurance”.
  • You, yourself, cannot drive. You’re not able to drive a car because of a disability or your age. But you need insurance if, in your car, someone’s going to provide you with transportation. You may, in fact, need to insure the primary driver if someone regularly uses your car.

License Reinstatement

If you were involved in an accident and didn’t have insurance, and you were at fault – or if your license was restricted or suspended due to a DUI or your bad driving record – to get your license reinstated, you’re going to need proof of insurance coverage. You will need to be able to show that you have purchased the minimum required coverage (in your state) to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

For the record, no law exists that says you can’t purchase a car if you have a suspended license or no license at all. You’ll need proof of insurance and a photo ID to register your new car. If you plan to drive it, you’ll need a learner’s permit or a driver’s license.
