Cargo Van Insurance in New York

Updated August 2026

Cargo van insurance is commercial auto coverage for Sprinters, Transits, ProMasters, and panel vans used for work. In New York, most owners pair liability (often $1 million for contract work) with motor truck cargo coverage for the freight itself. As an independent broker, K&N Insurance Brokerage compares quotes from multiple carriers in one call — cargo vans are the single most common commercial vehicle we insure.

Who Needs Cargo Van Insurance in New York?

If your van earns money — deliveries, tools, equipment, or freight — New York expects it to carry commercial coverage. Personal auto policies routinely exclude business use, and carriers cancel when they discover it. Couriers, contractors, and delivery businesses make up most of the cargo-van policies we write from our Queens office.

The cargo-van owners who call us every week include medical couriers running between labs and hospitals, last-mile delivery drivers, plumbers and electricians carrying tools between jobs, appliance-repair and TV-installation techs, mobile car-wash operators, and wholesale suppliers restocking bodegas and restaurants. For many of them it’s their first commercial policy ever — so below we explain the vocabulary carriers use, in plain English.

Will a Personal Policy Cover Your Van? Usually Not — Here’s the Test

Two things decide it, and most van owners learn them the hard way. First, body style: a van with no rear windows and no rear seats is treated as a commercial vehicle by most carriers — it can be ineligible for a personal policy even if you only drive it on weekends. Second, weight: many personal carriers cap eligibility around 3,500 lbs of load capacity, and a loaded work van clears that fast.

There is a middle path some owners qualify for — a business-use endorsement on a personal policy — but it depends on what you haul and how often. We wrote a full plain-English guide: Does personal car insurance cover business use? If you have commercial plates, though, New York requires a commercial policy — no endorsement gets around that.

What Coverage Does a Cargo Van Need?

A typical New York cargo-van policy has two layers: liability for what the van does, and cargo coverage for what it carries. Liability of $1,000,000 is the standard ask when you work for contract clients — many delivery contracts and vendor agreements require it. Cargo coverage (usually $100,000) protects the freight itself and is quoted separately.

Coverage What It Protects Typical NY Ask
Commercial auto liability Injuries and property damage you cause $1,000,000 CSL for contract work; state minimum only for light local use
Motor truck cargo The freight/goods you haul $100,000 is the most common request we see
Physical damage (collision/comprehensive) The van itself ACV-based; lenders require it on financed vans
General liability (separate policy) Your business operations off the road Often required by the same contracts — see commercial insurance in NY

Three cargo-coverage facts that surprise people: it is not included in a “full coverage” quote; it’s a separate application that typically takes up to three business days to quote; and delivery platforms or shippers often specify the exact limit you must show. Ask about it on the first call so the timeline doesn’t surprise you.

How Much Is Cargo Van Insurance in New York?

For a single van in the New York metro area, most quotes we see land between roughly $250 and $600+ per month depending on liability limit, radius, and driving history — with cargo coverage added on top. NYC garaging, a wider operating radius, and a $1M limit push toward the high end; a clean CDL-free driver with a local radius and state-minimum limits sits near the low end. These are indicative ranges from our own brokerage experience, not a quote.

Two cost realities customers tell us nobody warned them about: the down payment on a commercial policy commonly runs 20-40% of the annual premium (we can talk through payment plans before you commit), and quotes generally hold for only about a week — so if you’re assembling the down payment, tell us and we’ll time the quote accordingly. Shopping before you buy the van? We can give you an indicative range from the vehicle type — the firm number needs the VIN.

Have These Ready Before You Call — Quote in One Conversation

  • VIN of the van (or the exact model if you haven’t bought yet — we’ll give a range)
  • EIN / Tax ID if quoting under the business name (mid-formation? We can often start under your personal name and switch)
  • Driver’s licenses and dates of birth for every driver
  • Garaging address — where the van sleeps changes the rate more than most people expect
  • Prior insurance proof — a declaration page, or a Letter of Experience if a disputed accident is inflating your record
  • DOT number if you cross state lines or a contract requires one

Cargo Van Insurance — Questions New York Drivers Ask Us

Does my personal auto policy cover my cargo van for work?

Almost never. Business use is excluded on most personal policies, windowless panel vans are often ineligible entirely, and carriers cancel when business use surfaces. A business-use endorsement helps some light cases; commercial plates always require a commercial policy. Full explainer here.

Is cargo coverage included in full coverage?

No — this catches almost everyone. “Full coverage” means liability plus physical damage on the van. Motor truck cargo is a separate application with its own limit (commonly $100,000) and typically takes up to three business days to quote.

How big is the down payment on a commercial van policy?

Commonly 20-40% of the annual premium in our experience, with the balance in monthly installments. Paying in full usually earns a discount. Tell us your cash-flow reality up front and we’ll compare carriers on down payment too, not just annual price.

Can you bind coverage today so I can register at the DMV?

Usually yes — same-day binding for registration deadlines is routine for us when you have the VIN, driver licenses, and (for business-name policies) your EIN ready. Call (718) 739-9090 before your DMV appointment, not after.

I rent my van — can I insure it?

If the van is registered to the rental company, a standard commercial policy in your name can’t cover it — the rental company insures the vehicle. What you may need instead is hired and non-owned auto coverage for your business. Bring the rental agreement and we’ll sort out which.

Do I need general liability too?

If clients or contracts are involved, probably — about a quarter of the commercial-vehicle customers we quote end up adding general liability or workers comp in the same conversation. We can quote them together: commercial insurance in New York.
